Shells for sale, for a good causeBy JOHN MUNFORD Brittany Dubin, a third-grader at Peeples Elementary School, knows about the fragility of childhood. Five years ago, she spent almost three months recovering at Childrens Healthcare of Atlantas Egleston Hospital from a coma after she choked on a hot dog. So when she saw an opportunity to help other kids, she jumped at it. Vacationing on the beach over Christmas break, she decided to collect shells and sell them at home. All the proceeds went to Fayette Youth Protection Homes, which houses children who have been removed from their homes for abuse or neglect. A total of $42 was raised. I think we were really touched by the spirit of her giving, said FYPH Executive Director Becky Davenport. FYPH organizers are hoping Brittanys giving becomes contagious, especially heading into next month, for the groups largest fundraiser of the year, the Angels Among Us Valentine Dinner Dance and Silent Auction Feb. 12. The event begins at the Glendalough Manor in Tyrone with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30, and dancing and the silent auction from 8:30 to 10:30. Tickets are $75 per person and the event is black tie optional. To purchase tickets, contact Becky Davenport at 770-461-7020. The deadline to RSVP is Saturday, Feb. 5. FYPH depends on the generosity of businesses, civic groups and individuals to meet its financial obligations. A total of 20 beds are available for school-age children between the Friday Home on the north end of Fayette County and the Johnson Home located in Brooks. Children who come into the care of FYPH stay anywhere from a few days to several years, and they attend Fayette County schools. During their stay, they receive shelter, clothing, food, healthcare, counseling and most importantly, hugs, officials said. |
