Coweta County school officials gave a shout-out to their Fayette counterparts Tuesday night by adopting a school calendar that almost mirrors their neighbor to the east.
Were closely tied to Fayette County and a lot of our parents work over there, said board chairman Mitch Powell.
The new calendar has classes starting Aug. 8 and ending May 26. Students will receive a long week break Nov. 21-25 for Thanksgiving, along with a mid-winter break from Feb. 20-24. Spring break is April 3-7 and Christmas break runs from Dec. 21-Jan. 4.
The one central theme I read in parents comments was that they wanted that week for Thanksgiving, said board member Sue Brown.
The board had considered several alternatives, but were hampered because of the systems block scheduling that requires 90 days of lessons in each semester.
Board member Brian Roy had suggested adopting the Coweta-Fayette calendar, but did not receive a second on his motion. But after hearing about the constraints involved with the block scheduling, the board unanimously adopted it.
