The U.S. Naval Academys Gospel Choir has scheduled two performances in the Fayette County area this weekend, performing at Divine Faith Ministries in Jonesboro at 8 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, and later at Greater Saint Peter A.M.E. Church in Jonesboro during the 11 a.m. worship service.
The choirs visit to the Fayette County area is being co-sponsored by the Fayette County NAACP and Flat Rock A.M.E. Church in Fayetteville.
The Rev. Edward Johnson is president of the local NAACP branch and also is pastor of Flat Rock A.M.E.
Each year the USNA Gospel Choir comes to the Atlanta area to share in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. holiday festivities and to help recruit and provide information about the U.S. Naval Academy, with particular focus on minority enrollment.
The U. S. Naval Academy Gospel choir is comprised of young female and male midshipmen from all ethnic groups who are enrolled at the U.S. Naval Academy.
The choir performs traditional and contemporary gospel music, spirituals, and patriotic songs with uplifting enthusiasm and harmony, epitomizing the unity and equality existing at the U.S. Naval Academy and in the U.S. Naval Services, a spokesperson said.
Members of the choir will be available after the service to talk to students interested in the Naval Academy, West Point, the Air Force Academy and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
All members of the community are invited to the performance.
