Resolve to get involvedWhen making New Year's resolutions, many people make plans to do more to give back to the community. If this sounds like you, there is a special opportunity for you to help your community be prepared for emergencies. President Bush created the Citizens Corps and the Medical Reserve Corps after Sept. 11, 2001, to provide local communities with groups of organized and appropriately trained individuals who can assist in the implementation of emergency response plans. The Medical Reserve Corps is a locally-based group of volunteers who can assist the community in the event of a public health emergency. We are seeking individuals with a wide variety of skills. Medical training is not necessary, but medical professionals and mental health professionals are encouraged to apply. All volunteers will receive training and participate in exercises and drills to prepare them for their roles in emergency response. Some of the duties that volunteers are needed for include: Assisting with receiving and distributing of medical supplies and equipment. Staffing vaccine clinics. Providing administrative support and/or medical care in alternate care facilities. Assisting people with medical forms. Communication. Interpretation/translation. Visit www.mrcwga.org for more information or to download volunteer applications. Or call Elizabeth Fitch, volunteer coordinator, at (706) 845-4035. |
