Fire raced through the second-story bedroom of a Fayetteville home Monday night, forcing a man and his dog to flee from the home.
An untold number of occupants were inside the home at 230 Oak St., when the fire broke out at 9:42 p.m., but the occupants including the homeowner, William Ray, and his dachshund escaped unharmed.
Within three minutes of receiving a call, units of the Fayetteville Fire Department and the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services arrived to knock down the flames. Fifteen firefighters including eight from the city under the joint Automatic Mutual Aid agreement worked feverishly to douse the flames.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke conditions, Fayetteville Fire Chief Alan Jones said. They entered the home and advanced to the room where they found the origin of the fire. They located the fire in an upstairs bedroom, near a closet.
The firefighters did an interior attack and contained the fire to a room within minutes, but units remained on scene until 1:11 a.m., Jones said.
The fire was contained fairly quickly, Jones said. Within 20 minutes, the fire was contained and the rest of the time we spent doing salvage and overhaul and an investigation. We went back out three times to do a fire watch overnight and everything was okay. We just went back out there to make sure nothing had rekindled.
The fire caused significant heat and smoke damage to the second floor of the home. All told, the fire left the family with $55,000 in damage.
The incident is still under investigation, but all indications are that it was accidental in nature, Jones said. The occupants are staying with family until the home is repaired.
