Georgia Sports Foundation launches Lighten Up programIt is hard to not hear about the problem of obesity these days. The number of children who are overweight has almost quadrupled over the past 30 years, said Lisa Benish, Registered Dietitian. The number of teens who are overweight has tripled and the incidence of type 2 diabetes, once considered an adult only disease, has grown 10-fold. Numbers prove the need, but its up to parents to help their children deal with weight problems. Thats why the Georgia Sports Foundation will fight against both childhood and adult obesity with the Lighten Up Georgia program. Lighten Up Georgia is a five month program featuring friendly competition among teams of 5-10 people (friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, church members, etc.) The teams will compete on the bases of two categories: percentage of total team weight loss due to healthy, appropriate diet and physical activity and/or accumulated activity in the form of miles traveled (walked or run). The top three teams in each category will be awarded medals at the Georgia Games Championships in July. Visit www.lightenupgeorgia.com to register and get more information on the program. Have a happy and healthy new year!
