Aviation officials at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport anticipate more than 1.9 million travelers will pass through its facility during the eight-day Christmas travel season, which began Dec. 19 and ends Dec. 26. This figure represents a nearly 3 percent increase over 2003 projections for the same period.

Aviation General Manager Ben DeCosta believes the Airport is prepared to accommodate the increased number of arriving and departing travelers.

“Hartsfield-Jackson employs an excellent team of professionals who are ready to assist and serve our customers. Travelers with questions or requiring assistance should watch for Airport Customer Service Representatives wearing teal green jackets,” said DeCosta. “In November, we assisted 1.7 million travelers during the Thanksgiving holiday. We are delighted that as the demand for air travel continues to grow, more passengers are choosing to fly through Atlanta’s premiere aviation facility.” 

The following holiday travel tips are provided for smoother travel through the airport:

•Plan to arrive a minimum of  90 minutes prior to departure.

•To expedite the security checkpoint experience, travelers are encouraged to place metal items such as jewelry, loose change, cell phones, keys and pagers inside their carry-on luggage. 

•Travelers are also required to remove their outer most garments, which may include a coat, blazer, athletic jacket, or sport coat.

•Remove laptop computers from their cases and place them, along with any overcoats or jackets, inside the divestiture bins located near the security checkpoint lanes.

•Keep your photo identification handy and ensure that the name on your ticket matches your ID.

•Wait until you reach your destination to wrap presents.  Wrapped gifts may be opened and inspected.

•Remove all knives, scissors, corkscrews and blades of any type from your carry-on baggage. These items are not permitted in the sterile area of the airport or on board aircraft.
