The local basketball teams played their final games before the holiday break over the weekend.
Sandy Creek swept Luella High School on Friday. The girls improved to 9-0 on the season with a 61-24 win, while the boys won 61-30. Aaron Carruthers led the boys with 18 points, while Kevin Lott added 16 points and Michael Gates had six points and 10 rebounds. Also, last week the result of the Sandy Creek and Fayette County boys basketball game was incorrectly written. The Patriots won the game 79-75, which improved their record to 6-2 at the time. They are now 7-2 and will play in the Powerade tournament starting next Monday against Monroe Area at 5 p.m.The Lady Patriots will play in the Sweet South Classic next week.
Whitewaters girls are on a break but the boys have been playing in the Hwy. 78 tournament. On Friday, the Wildcats defeated Temple - while they lost to Bowdon 58-40 on Saturday.
Fayette Countys boys and girls were both winners against Jackson. The boys won 81-43 behind Jordan Windischs 25 points, while the Lady Tigers hung on for a 48-46 win. Richea Harris had 21 points in the win. McIntoshs boys and girls got swept by East Coweta on Saturday night. The Lady Chiefs lost a close one 52-47 while the boys lost 67-36. Our Lady of Mercys teams befell a similar fate against Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy. The Lady Bobcats lost 53-41 and the boys lost 79-53. Maria Gagliano had 10 points for the girls and Wade Binfield dropped in 17 points for the boys. The Starrs Mill girls defeated Chapel Hill 59-32 for their fourth victory of the season while the boys lost another close game 69-65. Mark Harris scored 30 points for the boys and Katie Jacobsen had 11 points for the girls.
