Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Capt. Pete Nelms said chimney fires are prevalent in the south during the winter because residents fail to check their chimney before lighting it for the first time. He urged residents to have a professional check the chimney. Failing to properly dispose of ashes is another problem that fire officials encounter often at winter. But Nelms said many fires that often result from improperly disposed of ashes could be avoided. Ashes can start a fire beyond five days. Residents often clean out the ashes and put them in a paper bag, which often leads to a fire, Nelms indicated. To combat this problem, Nelms urges residents to place the ashes in a metal container, take them outside, douse them water and then discard the ashes. He said residents should never just throw the ashes out in the leaves because many brush fires have started this way.
