And in the end, Cowetas two most vocal county commissioners went out with a bang.
Commissioners Robert Wood and Chairman Vernon Mutt Hunter ended their 12-year service Tuesday night before a sparse crowd. But even though the crowd was small, the show was not.
Im going out like I came in, raising hell, Hunter said.
Hunter, who has worked for Coweta County in various capacities for more than four decades said hes worked with people hes respected and people he really didnt care about. At the end of Tuesdays meeting, he addressed one of his sparring partners in the last few years, Commissioner Leigh Schlumper.
Ive learned to respect you, Hunter said.
Schlumper said that when she came on the board Hunter told her to stay away from him and he would stay away from her.
Weve come a long way and agreed on more things, Schlumper said.
Schlumper said she thought that Hunter has even come to love her, but Hunter wasnt buying any of that.
Wood, who was elected with Hunter in 1992, said he came to the board from the private sector and didnt have a big agenda for making big changes.
But, he feels that he did make a big contribution to the county.
I like to think that Ive helped create a synergism with this board and Im going to rename my real estate company Synergy, he said.
The other commissioners thanked Wood and Hunter for their service, and Paul Poole, whos taking Hunters place on the commission, led the audience in a hearty round of applause.
