Local teams crack top 20 at South Metro InvitationalBy MICHAEL BOYLAN Local wrestlers from the five county high schools attended the South Metro Invitational at Union Grove High School last Friday and Saturday. Starrs Mill placed second overall, followed by Fayette County in sixth place, Sandy Creek in 13th, McIntosh in 16th and Whitewater in 19th. Champions were Donte Douglas (130), Fayette County; Brandon Witta (140), Starrs Mill; Bradley Connor (215), Starrs Mill and Drake McCoy (275), Fayette County. McCoy was also named the tournaments outstanding wrestler for weight classes 145-275. Runners up were Stephen Savage (125), Starrs Mill; Cory Radcliffe (135), Starrs Mill; Zach Stanley (152), Fayette County and Patrick Kellerman (160), Starrs Mill. Savages match in the final against Woodward Academys Zach Crain was considered the best match of the tournament. Whitewater co-captain Jordan Strain (130) placed third, as did Sandy Creeks Alex Willis-Cruz (140) and Adam Byrd (189), and Starrs Mills Jeff Partlow (275). Starrs Mill had four wrestlers place fourth; Kevin OBrien (103), Keagon Overton (112), Kevin Thurber (119) and Matt Hartpence (152). Fayette Countys Matt Dyer also placed fourth. McIntoshs Richard Hughes (103) placed fifth as did Fayette Countys Ryan McNally (135) and Colin Evans (160). Sandy Creeks Frank Brand (145) also placed fifth while Whitewater co-captain Jake Griffin (152) placed sixth. Fayette County will wrestle in the Brookwood Invitational this Friday and Saturday while McIntosh and Whitewater will attend the Starrs Mill Invitational and Sandy Creek will wrestle in the Landmark Invitational. All five teams will meet up next Tuesday at 9 a.m. at McIntosh High School for the county duals.
