Oak Grove students raise $1,027Many families in Fayette County are gearing up to celebrate another holiday season, but some others are just trying to make ends meet. Students and faculty at Oak Grove Elementary in Peachtree City wanted to make sure that every family at the school had a reason to be merry this year. The schools CARE (Children at Risk in Education) team wrapped up the third annual Hope for the Holidays program. This year, the program raised $1,027.42 to be used to make the holidays a little brighter for six families. The families are more than appreciative, said school counselor Susanne Pinkley. Every penny will go toward making this holiday a truly blessed one for these families. Students donated their ice cream and allowance money for three weeks to raise the funds. Jingle Jars were placed in visible spots in each classroom and the cafeteria. Faculty and staff also raised money through a silent auction. This is a wonderful way to help teach our children the value of serving and helping others, said Pinkley. The money will be divided among the six families in the form of a Wal-Mart gift certificate. In addition, the school will also give toys to the children that have been donated by a local family. |
