Council cancels Dec. 16 meetingThe Peachtree City Council has cancelled its last regularly scheduled meeting of the year due to a lack of agenda items, officials said. The councils next meeting is slated for Thursday, Jan. 6. As the New Year approaches, council will face a host of critical decisions, including the possible annexation of 415 acres on the western side of the city, north of McDuff Parkway. Council is also expected to vote, at some point, on a rezoning petition that would allow a Walgreens pharmacy to replace Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church at a crucial intersection in town: where Ga. Highway 54 and Peachtree Parkway connect. Proponents of the annexation, including Mayor Steve Brown, point out that it would allow McDuff Parkway to be extended to Ga. Highway 74, creating traffic relief for the often-clogged intersection of highways 54 and 74. Although there has been little opposition to the annexation to date, there have been more outcries about the rezoning, which would make the churchs current parcel limited use commercial. Currently, the site is zoned for office institutional use. The matter was originally to be debated at a planning commission meeting last month, but it was postponed at the request of the developer, city officials said. |
