Tigers get their feet wet, swim wellThe Fayette County High School swim team participated in the first two meets of the 2004-2005 season last weekend. The Tigers placed second in a tri-swim meet against Starrs Mill and Landmark last Friday. The 200 Medley relay team, made up of seniors Rachel Talley and Christi Froehlich and juniors Katelyn Davis and Jordan Gore finished one hundredth of a second short of the state qualifying time. Swimmers placing in the top three of their event were junior Christina Luetz (200 freestyle), junior Kaitlin McNally (200 individual medley), Talley (50 free, 100 breast) and Froehlich (100 back, 100 free). Gore finished first in the 50 free and 100 free and Davis placed first in the 100 fly and second in the 100 breast obtaining the first state cuts for the 2004-2005 season. The boys were led by seniors Andrew Whatley and Jason Gridley finishing second in the 200 medley relay and second in the 200 free relay. Swimmers placing in the top three of their event were Gridley (200 free, 100 breast), senior Matthew Moore (200 individual medley), freshman Sean Phillips (50 free, 100 free), and Whatley (100 fly). Fridays meet was unusual by any standards. Several starting blocks were broken, so races begin from the side of the pool instead of from blocks. There was also a middle school race going on at the same time and the water in the pool was salt water. It was kind of frustrating for our swimmers, said Coach Tami Moore. Saturday went much better. Moore added that everybody on the team was making progress and that the team would continue to practice during finals week. The second meet for the weekend was against Salem and Riverwood. The Tigers placed third. The girls relay team consisting of Froehlich, Davis, Gore and junior Michelle Bangsboll placed first, again narrowly missing state qualifying times in the 200 Medley and 200 free relay. Gore took first in the 100 free, Davis, for the second consecutive day, swam state qualifying times taking first in both the 100 fly and 100 breast. Phillips took third in the 100 free for the boys. The next meet for the Fayette County High School swim team is Friday, Dec. 17 in Gainesville. |
