Crash kills Fayetteville manBy LEE WILLIAMS A 63-year-old Fayetteville man was killed and four young people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Ga. Highway 314 near Fernwood Drive. Harold Jewsome died at the scene due to severe injuries he received when his 1999 Dodge Ram pickup truck collided with a 2000 Chevrolet Impala driven by Alfred Haley Jr., 18, of Stockbridge, authorities said. According to information provided by the Fayette County Sheriff's Office's Traffic Enforcement Division, Haley's actions might have led to the crash. However, no charges have been filed in the case, Traffic Enforcement Division Director Lt. Col. Wayne Hannah said. Haley was traveling south on Ga. Highway 314 about 7:50 a.m. near Fernwood Drive when his Impala crossed the median and struck Jewsome's pickup that was traveling north in the left lane. Haley, who sustained severe head and internal injuries, was flown by medical helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center. Haley's two passengers also were injured and transported to a hospital for treatment. "There were two juvenile passengers in the back seat of the Impala," Hannah said. "The 7-year-old was wearing her seat belt and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with minor visible injuries. The 5-month-old was properly secured in a child safety seat. He was also transported by ambulance to a local hospital with minor injuries." Jewsome had an occupant in his pickup at the time of the fatality, officials said. "A 12-year-old passenger in the pickup was wearing a seat belt," Hannah said. "He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with minor visible injuries." Both drivers, however, were not wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, Hannah said. Traffic was rerouted during morning rush hour on Highway 314 for hours while officials worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the accident. The accident remains under investigation, officials said. The cause of the crash has not been released. |
