Residents turned out last week to usher in the holiday season in Palmetto.
The center was originally built in the late 1940s, but has been closed for the last 10 years The event celebrated the start of the season and the opening of the center. Palmetto city administrator Bill Shell hosted the show, and the crowd was welcomed by Mayor Clark Boddie. Southern Mix provided the musical entertainment. Student winners of an essay contest What Christmas Means to Me, were announced and each received a trophy and $25. Winners were Thomas Carswell III, fourth grader at Palmetto Elementary, Jesse Roden, second grader at Palmetto Elementary and Brittany Hayes, ninth grader at Northgate High School. The event culminated with the lighting of the tree and Santa arriving on a firetruck. |
