Tennis center secures natl. championship tourney for 2005By JOHN MUNFORD Peachtree Citys tennis center will once again host the USTA Girls 14 National Championships as one of five tournaments approved by the citys Tourism Association at a recent meeting. The tournaments are being operated by Metro Tennis Associates of Fairburn, which will pay $1,000 in court fees for the year. Tourism association chairman Steve Rapson praised the economic impact of bringing about 200 players, mostly from outside Georgia, and their families for the nine-day tournament. With an estimated 1,200 hotel room night booked for the tournament and families spending upwards of $300 each per day, the impact can add up, he said. All players will stay in Peachtree City for at least three nights until the first round of elimination is conducted, officials said. Some of the initial matches will also be held at The Summit YMCA in Newnan the first four days of the tournament because of the volume of players involved. This is really the biggest event the tennis center does, Rapson said. Executive Director Linda McCarthy also noted that courts are reserved for the use of tennis center members during any tournament at the center. The event is scheduled for Aug. 5-13. The four other tournaments in the contract include the USTA Open 12 Championships from May 21-25, the GoodSports Junior Championship 1 from March 12-13, the GoodSports Junior Championship 2 from April 23-24 and the Serve for Civitan tourney from Sept. 17-18. |
