Season ends for locals playing college ballBy MICHAEL BOYLAN It was the first year for The Citizen to follow former football players from the county as they played college football. It was exciting to track their progress week to week and we will have statistics from the bowl games for the players whose teams have made the postseason. Darrell Burston (Starrs Mill) had one solo tackle, one tackle for a loss and one quarterback hurry for Florida State University. Drew Cofty (Starrs Mill) rused for 2,041 yards in his career at McKendree College. He is only the third running back in the history of the school to rush for over 2,000 yards. John Deraney (Fayette County) kicked 13 field goals and 29 extra points for 68 total points for North Carolina State University. Deraneys longest field goal was kicked from 53 yards out. Jason Earwood (Starrs Mill) had nine solo tackles and six assists for 15 total tackles for Georgia Southern University. He also had three tackles for a loss, one sack and one fumble recovery. Johnny Edwards (Starrs Mill) had five solo tackles and three assists for a totla of eight tackles for Wake Forest University. Matt Fuhrman (Starrs Mill ) had 47 solo tackles and 31 assists for 78 total tackles for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. He also had 15 tackles for a loss, six sacks, one interception, four quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Kedric Golston (Sandy Creek) had 11 solo tackles and 10 assists for 21 total tackles for the University of Georgia. He also had two tackles for a loss , one sack and 15 quaterback hurries. Jermaine Harris (Sandy Creek) had 17 solo tackles and 10 assists for 27 total tackles for the University of South Carolina. He also had an interception and two broken up passes. Phillip Hyde (Sandy Creek) rushed for 320 yards and two touchdowns this season for Samford University. Chris James (Starrs Mill) kicked nine field goals and 34 extra points for a totl of 61 points this season for Western Kentucky University. His longest field goal was a 44 yarder. Calvin Johnson (Sandy Creek) was Gerogia Techs leading receiver with 46 catches for 776 yards, both Tech freshman records. He ranks second in the ACC in receiving yards per game (70.6), third in receptions per game (4.18) and second in touchdowns with six. Nationally, Johnson ranks second among freshmen in receiving yards per game. Will Judson (Sandy Creek) returned 16 punts for 94 yards for Florida A&M University. His longest return was 24 yards. He also had 35 kickoff returns for 677 yards. His longest kickoff return was 39 yards. J.R. Lemon (Sandy Creek) rushed for 440 yards and six touchdowns for Stanford University. He also had 62 yards receiving this year. Riley Swanson (Sandy Creek) had 36 solo tackles and 13 assists for 49 total tackles for Wake Forest University.
