Patriots and Wildcats tie in first meetingBy MICHAEL BOYLAN When they met on the mats last Wednesday, Sandy Creek and Whitewaters varsity wrestling teams tied 34-34. Both teams also won handily over Villa Rica. The Patriots won 70-12, while the Wildcats won 70-10. Four Sandy Creek wrestlers went 2-0 on the day: Steven Hoffler (103), Jeremiah Graham (119), Derek Scarborough (215), and Chris Gaston (275). Alex Willis-Cruz (140), Frank Brand (145) and Drew Gunnin picked up wins against the Wildcats. Among the wrestlers for Whitewater who went 2-0 on the day were Jake Huddleston (125), Jordan Strain (130), Jake Griffin (152) and Zach Williamson (180). Sandy Creek will host Alexander and Piedmont, Alabama today at 5:30 p.m., while Whitewater will wrestle Douglas County and Villa Rica, at Douglas County at 6 p.m. Both the Patriots and Wildcats will also wrestle at the South Metro Invitational at Union Grove High School at 5 p.m. on Friday and at 9 a.m. on Saturday. In other wrestling news from last Wednesday, McIntosh lost to Henry County 58-21, but defeated Upson Lee 56-18. Winners for the Chiefs against Henry County were: Richard Hughes (103), pin; Doug Taylor (125), 15-8; Davarion Smith (140), 6-2; and Darryl Walton (215), pin. Hughes, Taylor, Smith and Walton all picked up wins against Upson Lee, as did Jessy Toscano (119), pin; Carl Scheumann (130), pin; Matt Penn (135), 8-3; Jeff Patrie (152), pin; and Adam Dale (189), pin. The Chiefs will wrestle at LaGrange today at 5 p.m. and will wrestle at the South Metro tournament at Union Grove High School on Friday and Saturday. |
