lbianchi@thecitizennews.com Macys Santaland opens each year to New York Citys shoppers bringing the sparkle and magic of the North Pole up close and personal for the holidays. Thankfully for those of us who cant make the trek each year, humorist extraordinaire, David Sedaris preserved the experience for us in The Santaland Diaries. Adapted by Joe Mantello and directed by Clint Thornton, the sixth annual production of this surreal trip through retail returns to delight audiences at the Horizon Theatre. Harold M. Leaver as elf employee Crumpet, reprises his role which has been sharpened to a fine point. Running around a miniature version of Macys, Crumpet gives the inside scoop on all things elven, spilling the beans on Santas multiple personages and fellow workers in red and green. The cast is completed by two very funny actors who portray shoppers and supervisors which help to make Santaland the special sort of Hell that it is. Jill Hames and Topher Payne as Sidekick Girl and Sidekick Boy punctuate Leavers nasty narrative to sidesplitting perfection. The overall experience is a deliciously skewed look at what makes Christmas such a special time of year. Definately not for the traditionalist, The Santland Diaries takes liberties with jingle bells, mistletoe, and all things merry. Creative Loafing calls it a fiendishly exhilarating, politically incorrect send-up of the holidays. The Santaland Diaries plays through January 2 at The Horizon Theatre located at Euclid and Austin Avenues in Little Five Points, Atlanta. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Tuesday - Friday; 8:30 p.m. Saturday; and 5 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $20 per person. Visit horizontheatre.com, or phone the box office at 404-584-7450. This show is recommended for ages 17 and older. |
