What does it cost to get elected to Congress from the Eighth District?
For victor Lynn Westmoreland, the primary and general election campaigns cost him $1.67 million, an amount raised from dozens of individuals, companies and political action groups.
His runoff challenger in the Republican primary, Dylan Glenn, spent more than $1 million in a losing cause.
To get a glimpse into the supporters behind local candidates campaigns, The Citizen is publishing an exhaustive list of those who contributed $101 or more to each candidate.
Interestingly enough, three of four candidates running for contested seats on the county commission, including winning incumbents Peter Pfeifer and Herb Frady along with challenger David Simmons, all raised in the neighborhood of the $7,000 range.
Only challenger Sam Chapman, who lost to Pfeifer, reported monies into the five-figure range: $23,320, all but $220 of which came from his own pocket.
All ran in the GOP primary.
There was a wide disparity, too, for the Tyrone mayors race, where incumbent winner Sheryl Lee raised just $1,225 in cash, while challenger Grace Caldwell reported spending over $10,000, almost all of which, she said, was her own money.
Caldwell did not disclose her personal contributions in her report, instead showing a negative balance for her campaign, but she told The Citizen in a recent interview that she mostly used her own money, which she didnt regret.
The money got more heady for those aspiring to election and reelection to a superior court judges seat in the four-county Griffin Judicial Circuit.
Incumbent winner Johnnie L. Caldwell Jr. raised $58,001 in cash and $7,104.99 in-kind contributions, while unsuccessful challenger John W. Mrosek raised $49,340 in cash and $1,750 in-kind.
The other contested superior court judge seat wasnt as close from a financial standpoint. Tommy R. Hankinson, who won reelection, raised $66,676 in cash and $2.479 in-kind, compared to challenger Steve Harris totals of $18,922.
Superior Court Judge Paschal A. English Jr., who was unopposed, still raised $4,939.98 in cash.
In the race for district attorney, Scott Ballard unseated incumbent Bill McBroom, who raised more than $20,000 more than Ballard did.
Ballard reported $51,411.38 in cash with no in-kind contributions. McBroom raised $73,315 in cash, with just over $7,000 in-kind contributions.
Like the judges, Ballard and McBroom had to win votes in all four counties of the Griffin Judicial Circuit, which includes Fayette, Spalding, Pike and Upson counties.
Jamie Inagawa, who won the solicitor-general post over Lura Handley Landis, more than doubled his competitors donations. Inagawa raised $40,280.34 in cash and $1,425 in-kind contributions, while Landis reported $19,121.97 in cash with no in-kind contributions.
The least amount of money spent was for the Post 3 seat on the Fayette County Board of Education. Winning incumbent Marion Key raised $1,673.54 in cash and $360 in-kind while challenger Connie H. Leary reported $2,880 in cash and $250 in-kind contributions.

What the figures mean
Campaign parties, campaign signs, and campaign advertisements are just about inescapable for most persons seeking public office.
Which means the candidates need cash contributions, some more than others, to get the job done.
In Georgia, candidates must file paperwork disclosing the names of each person who donated $101 or more to his or her campaign in cash or in the form of in-kind contributions, meaning services or materials donated to the candidates.
Donors wanting to keep their names anonymous and out of the public eye must donate $100 or less, even if their contribution is of the in-kind variety.
