Former President Jimmy Carters grandson faces burglary and drug possession charges after he entered a Peachtree City home, swiped an X-Box video game and hid under the bed to avoid detection, police said.
Moments after the burglary, Peachtree City police officers tracked down the alleged thief, identified as Jeremy Davis Carter, 17, at his Peachtree City home, 311 Spear Rd., and charged him with burglary, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and a minor in possession of alcohol.
Carter, a McIntosh High School senior, is the second oldest son of Annette and Donnel Jeff Carter, Jimmy Carters youngest son.
Using the front door, police said, Carter entered the home of Kay and Terry Beckom, 201 Clear Springs Lane in Peachtree City, between 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. Dec. 4. According to police, the McIntosh High School student was no stranger to the Beckom family.
When first encountered, Jeremy Carter was observed hidden under a bed in one of the childrens rooms, police said. After a few moments, Carter shimmied out from under the bed while holding an X-Box video game system and bolted from the home, police said.
Wearing a red shirt and tan pants, Carter scaled a fence and ran into another resident who wrestled the X-Box, valued at $150, from Carters clutches, police said.
Witnesses, including Kay Beckom, 17-year-old Jordan Bradford Beckom, 17-year-old Brendon Thomas Hall, a 14-year-old, and a 16-year-old provided information to police that led to Carters capture.
Carter allegedly was found with marijuana and alcohol when later encountered by police.
Carter was arrested and taken to the Fayette County Jail for booking. He was released about 5 p.m. Sunday after posting a $11,500 bond, officials said.
Kay Beckom notified police about the incident. When reached from home Tuesday afternoon, Kay Beckom hung up the telephone before making a statement.
A person who picked up another telephone extension stated Mrs. Beckom was busy.
Members of the Jeff Carter and Jimmy Carter families could not be reached for comment.
