Sandy Creek boys seeking region titleBy MICHAEL BOYLAN
The Sandy Creek Patriots placed fourth in the region last year after winning the region title the previous two years. They made it to the state basketball tournament but did not go deep. The Patriots have a new coach this year, Darrell Evans, a senior-laden team and the desire to make it back to the state tournament and contend for a title. Leading the way for the Patriots is Aaron Carruthers, who averaged over 27 points per game in the Parkview tournament last week. Carruthers is joined by Charles Belton and Kevin Lott as the players who provide a lot of the offense for Sandy Creek. Evans hopes to have his players play an up tempo game and use the athleticism of his team to out run, out jump and out hustle other teams this season. We want to do things that others are not accustomed to, said Evans, who believes that the Patriots should be one of the top teams in the region. Belton and Daniel Hendricks will also be counted on to provide a lot of defense for the Patriots this year, as Evans is hoping to put a lot of defensive pressure on their opponents this year. One area where Sandy Creek is doing a great job is in rebounding. The Patriots have had a number of players pull in a good amount of rebounds so far. Terrance Robins had 10 rebounds against Southwest Atlanta Christian, while Lott added nine in the win. The region schedule will start Jan. 4 with a game at Northgate. In preparation for the region opener, the boys will face local rivals Starrs Mill (Dec. 4) and Fayette County (Dec. 11) and Lithia Springs, Chapel Hill and Luella before playing in the Powerade Fest Dec. 27-30. So far, Sandy Creek has a record of 3-1. That record wont mean much when region play begins but the early part of the schedule should prepare them to make a run at another region title and a chance to contend for a state title. |
