The high school basketball season has started and paused for Thanksgiving. Things get rolling again this weekend as Fayette County and McIntosh finish off the Mt. Zion Thanksgiving tournament, by facing off against each other Saturday at 3:15 (girls) and 5:30 (boys).
The McIntosh varsity boys and girls basketball teams opened their seasons last Friday with losses to Fayette County. The Lady Chiefs lost 59-24, while the boys lost 72-46. McIntoshs girls trailed at the end of the first quarter 18-6 and the Lady Tigers widened the lead to 37-13 at the half. They would outscore McIntosh 22-11 in the second half to hold on to the win. Elyse Chubb led the Lady Chiefs in scoring with 10 points.
The boys had a similar fate against Fayette County, trailing 18-10 after the first quarter and 43-24 at the half. The Tigers edged the Chiefs 18-14 in the third quarter and 11-8 in the fourth quarter to maintain their advantage. Jason Williams led the Chiefs with 13 points.
In the Mt. Zion tournament so far, the Lady Chiefs have lost to Mt. Zion Jonesboro, 54-34, while the boys have lost to Jonesboro 56-43. Further details were not available at the time the paper went to press. McIntosh will host East Coweta Tuesday with the girls game at 6 p.m. and the boys schedule to tip off 15 minutes after the conclusion of the girls game.
The Starrs Mill boys followed up a season opening loss to Stockbridge with a 67-56 win over Savannah Christian in the Savannah Shhot-Out on Tuesday night. Todd Oakley led the Panthers in scoring with 14 points while Vinnie LeDonne added 13 points. Starrs Mill also had three players with six points each; Mark Harris, Nick Plotner and Bo Tiller.
We are always telling the guys that the most important part of any game is the first three minutes of the second half, said Coach Dave Edinger. The Panthers must have understood as they outscored Savannah Christian 11-3 in that time, building on their four point half time lead and taking control of the game.
The Panthers were scheduled to take on Savannah Calvary at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening in the championship game before heading back home in time for Thanksgiving dinner.
The Lady Panthers, which lost to Stockbridge, 35-27, in their opener did not play in a hoiday tournament. They will host Chapel Hill on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and the boys game will follow.
The other local games scheduled for Tuesday night include Sandy Creek hosting Lithia Springs at 6 and 7:30 p.m. , Our Lady of Mercys boys hosting Mt. Paran at 6 p.m. and Whitewaters boys and girls hosting Dutchtown at 6 and 7:30 p.m.
