Lady Wildcats ready to pounce in first varsity seasonBy MICHAEL BOYLAN
The Whitewater varsity girls basketball team is looking to surprise their opponents this season. Though they are young, made up entirely of freshmen and sophomores, and small, no member is over 510, they are quick and they play well defensively. Much like Whitewaters varsity boys team, the girls are playing a varsity schedule this year as a learning experience. They expect to be competitive but they also know they are laying the groundwork for the years ahead. Basically, we have four year seniors, said Coach Dave Pina. These girls will have the luxury of playing together all four years. They get better every game and you can only get better by playing better teams. The Lady Wildcats started the season on the right foot, nabbing a 44-36 win over Eagles Landing Christian Academy. Though they lost their next two games, one to a stellar and super-talented Haralson County team and one to Our Lady of Mercy, Whitewater will be in a lot of games this year and they will win their fair share. The Lady Wildcats are led by shooting guard and co-captain Courtney Walker, who Pina says has a great shot, plays good defense and is a leader on the floor. Joining Walker in the back court is freshman Brittany Vining, an extremely quick player with good ball skills. Vining is joined by another freshman Jackie Giddens, who is capable of putting up some points, while Marissa Williams is developing into a solid post player. Pina cites her athleticism, aggressiveness and agility among her attributes. The other captain on the team is Brentley Collins, a player who provides the intangibles that help teams win games. The Lady Wildcats inexperience may cost them some of their early games on the schedule, but they will learn from their losses and those lessons will pay off in the future. Whitewater will host Dutchtown at 6 p.m next Tuesday.
