Hopewell UMC kids, youth respond to needs of othersThe Hopewell United Methodist Church children and youth groups recently participated in two activities, helping those less fortunate than themselves. The childrens group collected enough toys, games and goodies to fill 48 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, and the youth group responded to the locally-based Fayette Samaritans plea for food to re-stock their shelves. Both activities were completed on Sunday, Nov. 14 and both groups are led by Hopewells youth director, Mary Beth Thompson. The childrens group. called KFC (Kids For Christ). is for children in kindergarten through fifth grade and meets Sundays at 4:30 p.m. Recently restructured, the KFC boasts a current membership of 23. We have an awesome bunch of kids and, with the help of parent volunteers, we are focusing on discipleship by learning to help those less fortunate, Thompson said. When the recent plea from Fayette Samaritans indicated that the shelves of food for those less fortunate were bare, the Hopewell UMC youth group swung into action and canvassed the neighborhood for help. The group participated in the second annual Can Food Scavenger Hunt on Nov. 14. They had fun going from house to house looking for canned food, Thompson said. The dedicated group works year-round on service projects to collect points they need to participate in fun activities such as their late December ski-trip to West Virginia. Each youth member needs six service points to go on the trip. The junior youth meet at 5 p.m. on Sundays, while the senior youth meet at 6:30 p.m. Both groups meet and eat together at 5:30 p.m. Call the church office for more information, 770-306-7537, or email Thompson at marybethr@tjchameleon.com. |
