Fayette bus drivers send special delivery to troops

With some help and generosity from the community, Fayette County school bus drivers have granted a holiday wish for some troops stationed in Iraq.

When word reached the Fayette County School System’s transportation department that the troops wanted chocolate and a Christmas tree with decorations for the holidays, the drivers shifted into first gear and put the wheels in motion to make the wish come true.

The department learned about the troops’ wish for the holidays from fellow bus driver Debbie Eubanks who has a family member currently stationed in Iraq.

“From the time we learned about this, we only had 10 days to get the items and ship them so that they would reach these beautiful people in time for the holidays,” said Linda Mosley, one of the drivers who spearheaded the effort.

Fayette’s business community was quick to offer its assistance. Wal-Mart donated a Christmas tree and Pat McPherson, store manager of the Publix at Whilshire Pavilion on Ga. Highway 74, donated 25 pounds of chocolate candy. The bus drivers donated the decorations for the tree and another 25 pounds of chocolate.

“Two of our ladies decided that 25 pounds wasn’t a big enough gesture of our love, so they donated 25 more,” said Mosley.

A collection taken by the drivers, along with a donation from Diana Golden of Fayetteville, paid for the postage needed to ship the items.

“On Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m., our love, time, thoughts, prayers and tears were on their way to these wonderful individuals who are fighting for our freedom and safety,” said Mosley. “Thank you one and all for making so many people happy. We have succeeded again, even on short notice.”

Greeting cards designed and printed by bus driver Brenda Nall were distributed to all drivers so that they could write notes of encouragement to the troops. The cards were mailed separately along with a request for the troops to write back letting the drivers know that their gifts reached their destination.
