Youth Council open to all Fayette high school students

Info meeting, debate/election meeting on the calendar

The Peachtree City Youth Council is opening its membership ranks to all high school students in Fayette County, who are invited to attend a meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at City Hall in Peachtree City to learn more.

The youth council, which hosts events for teens and conducts special community projects, consists of one chairperson and five co-chairpersons. The rest of the council serves as voting members, who are qualified to vote after attending three meetings and helping with one special event or project.

Currently, the youth council has about 25 students representing Starr’s Mill and McIntosh high schools, but they are seeking representatives from Fayette County, Sandy Creek and Whitewater high schools as well, said Art Sivertsen, youth and teen coordinator for the Peachtree City Recreation Department.

“If we can get more teens involved from outside of Peachtree City, who knows, this may become a countywide youth council,” Sivertsen said.

The youth council will host its second pizza party debate and election Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at City Hall. To qualify for the election, teens must submit a notice of election form by the Dec. 6 deadline. The form is available online by visiting www.peachtree-city.org and clicking on the link for “PTC Youth Council Elections.”

The council will host a “Winter Jam” party for teens the night after finals (Thursday, Dec. 16) from 6:30 to 10:30 at the Gathering Place. Among the activities will be live bands, playing cards, Xbox games, hacky sack and open mic freestyle rap.

“We are trying to offer a positive environment where teens can be with other teens without being enticed to hang out in a vacant parking lot or on the cart paths,” Sivertsen said.

The youth council will also be volunteering at the Hosea Williams Feed the Hungry event at Turner Field Christmas Eve.
