While it appears that Waffle House will build a new restaurant in Tyrone, it might be a while before the smell of grilled onions wafts over the western Fayette town.
During last weeks meeting, Waffle House representative Terry Koza appeared before the Town Council to try for final approval on his site plan.
But suddenly, a pesky fly appeared in the ointment in the form of a new design discovered by town manager Barry Amos.
I was exploring on the Net and found this design, Amos said, as he handed a copy of the design to a stunned Koza.
Amos said the Waffle House design he favored is in Ft. Collins, Colo., and features a number of unique architectural elements that made it stand out from the traditional black and yellow box.
And its been approved by your corporate office, Amos said.
Koza said he would submit it to the corporate office, but couldnt make any promises.
Councilman Paul Letourneau said he didnt want to vote on the site plan until he heard an answer from the companys corporate office.
Tyrone is a unique place, and wed like to have a unique Waffle House, he said.
Many in the crowd expressed their disappointment that a fast-food joint was coming to town, and Councilman Lyn Redwood made her feelings well-known.
We could have had a nice development on that site. Im just disappointed, she said.
Amos explained the property was part of the parcel that was zoned as a PUD in 1997. The town fought the zoning and lost the legal battle, so the town has very little control over what goes on the property. The Waffle House would be located across the street from the Publix shopping center on Ga. Highway 74.
The council decided to defer the issue until its Dec. 16 meeting.
