Lady Chiefs looking forward to new seasonBy MICHAEL BOYLAN
Coach Steve Kidd isnt sure exactly how the McIntosh Lady Chiefs will fare this season, but he feels good about the group. This years team is made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores and while the other starters dont have much varsity experience, Kidd sees a lot of talent on the team Were incorporating a lot of new things and our young players will just have to ajust to the speed of varsity play. The Lady Chiefs will lay the groundwork for the season with a focus on defense and Kidd is hoping that a controlled offense, one that moves the basketball up the court with limited turnovers, will help his young team. Returning to the squad this year is point guard Alex Smith, who started about half of the varsity games last year. Senior Tina Ross, who played basketball her freshmen and sophomore years but did not play last year, returns to the court this season She works hard and will contribute this year, said Kidd, who added that Elizabeth Hale and Sally Maple are also returning players from last years squad. Kidd also has high hopes for 511 freshmen Erin Justice and Elyse Chubb, two of four freshmen on the varsity roster. I expect both girls to take on a good amount of the scoring load, said Kidd. They have good skills and play solidily on offense. This is McIntoshs first year in Region 4-AAAA, so their competition is also a bit of an unknown. Once the Lady Chiefs go through their sub-region schedule once, theyll have a better idea of where they stand. McIntosh kicks off the season tonight with a 7 p.m. home game against Fayette County. The boys will play 15 minutes after the girls game finishes. |
