Panthers finish season at 10-2By MICHAEL BOYLAN
Starrs Mills football season came to an end last Friday with a 21-0 loss to Camden County. The Panthers finished with a record of 10-2. It was a tough game and a tough loss for our players, said Coach Mike Earwood. We had a good year and we all wanted to continue playing. It was a good year for both the offense and defense, rebounding from an uneven 2003 season. The Panthers offense averaged 29.8 points per game, while the defense gave up an average of 12.6 points per game. The offense was led by sophomore quarterback Robby Davis, who threw for 766 yards and 11 touchdowns. He averaged 63.8 yards passing per game and threw four interceptions. The leading receiver for the team was Sean OBrien, who had 13 catches for 266 yards and two touchdowns. Antonio Scott had seven catches for 158 yards and a touchdown. Carter Scurry caught three touchdown passes on the year, while Thomas Parks added two and Brent Oglesby, Kyle McCreary and Matt Johnson each had one touchdown reception. Starrs Mills rushing attack was perhaps the most solid portion of their offense this year. Scott rushed for 1,110 yards and 12 touchdowns this year, while McCreary rushed for 920 yards and 13 touchdowns. other players who rushed for touchdowns this year were Davis with four, OBrien with three and Michael Buice with two. Earwood typically credited the entire defense for playing extremely well together as a cohesive unit. Among players who stood out in more than one game were Scurry, Justin Dupont, Jeff Partlow, Bradley Connor and Ben Griffin, among others. Dante Allen had three interceptions, while Scurry, Kenneth James, Chad Gloer, Phillip Shell, Tyler Olmstead and Thomas Parks each had one. Scurry had two fumble returns for touchdowns, while Trevor Dupont and Johnson each had a fumble return for a touchdown. The team will graduate 26 seniors from their roster this year but will have 30 seniors on next years roster. It will be a case of reloading for the Panthers who will set their sights on a region title and another trip to the state football playoffs. |
