Fulton Receives Remainder of Flu Vaccine Order

The Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness has received the remaining 7,500 doses of influenza vaccine ordered for the 2004 flu season.

These doses will be distributed to high-risk individuals according to guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Residents in long-term care facilities will be the first population to receive the vaccine.  They are among groups at the highest risk of death if the flu is contracted.

The next targeted group to receive the vaccine will be elderly and high-risk patients who were placed on waiting lists at Fulton County health centers but were unable to be served due to limited supplies.

After serving these groups, the Department of Health & Wellness will re-evaluate other populations who might be eligible to receive any remaining vaccine supplies.

Currently, it is not possible to estimate whether any doses of the vaccine will be available for the general public after those identified as most at-risk receive theirs first.

Fulton County ordered a total of 15,000 vaccines for the 2004-2005 flu season. Previous shipments have already been exhausted.

"We still urge residents to be patient until we can meet the most critical needs and protect the most vulnerable populations," said Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness Director Dr. Steven Katkowsky.

Health officials are urging residents to take precautions to prevent the spread of influenza.
