The pros and cons of sewer lift stations and gravity flow sewer systems were discussed Tuesday at Union Citys monthly city council meeting with the gravity system winning out.
Pending approval of an easement from Christian City, the joint gravity system was given until March 31 of next year for its completion. If the project is not finished by the deadline, then the city reserves the right to install a lift station at Lester Pointe.
Officials said aerial crossings used in lift stations have some risk involved when inclement weather is added in. Trees and debris can puncture the above ground line sending raw sewage flowing onto the landscape. Potential fines from the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) could run as high as $100,000.
Noxious odors were another concern of extremely long forced mains, which can run up to several miles. The addition of another mechanical device in the sewer system seemed to signal more problems for the city.
The council listened to both sides of the argument to make sure they were making an informed decision. With all the facts before them, Council Member Shirley Jackson motioned for the gravity systems approval with Council Member Barbara Bohannon seconding the motion.
