While we’re on the subject of beefs, I’d love to know why in the world Fayetteville only has one donut shop.

Moreover, where is the world is Fayette County’s Krispy Kreme store?

Dunkin’ Donuts is nice, but the location and size makes getting in and out difficult. Yes, you can get pre-packaged Krispy Kremes in local grocery stores, but they’re just not the same as the real thing.

There’s also the option of trudging north to the newly-renovated store in Riverdale, a siren call I couldn’t resist two weekends ago.

But why can’t that company figure out Fayette County has over 100,000 people now and we deserve our own Krispy Kreme store polluting the air with that super sweet smell?

It’s probably to my benefit that Krispy Kreme isn’t around. At my most recent physical, the good doctor said I should start to lay off donuts and the like, and I have to a certain degree.

But if the Mennonites somehow open a Fayette location of their Pineland Bakery, all bets are off. Their chewy donuts have the thickest layer of sugary glaze and the cinnamon buns are OH! to die for.

I got hooked on the Pineland pastries while cutting my teeth as a rookie reporter in Waynesboro, just south of Augusta. Quitting cold turkey wasn’t easy when we moved here and no locally available donuts compare. At least none that I’ve sampled.

Last year on a return visit to Waynesboro I grabbed a dozen glazed donuts along with several cinnamon buns and whatever else the good wife wanted on my Saturday morning Pineland dash.

As we drove the half-hour jaunt to Augusta, I mindlessly woofed down glazed donut after glazed donut.

I put down about six or seven in a row without a thought. They’re that good. And I’m that bad, at least when it comes to sweets and a not-so-healthy diet.
