Caldwell spent $11K on fun
for mayor

Incumbent mayor spent just $653

Grace Caldwell got $625 in contributions for her failed campaign to oust incumbent Tyrone Mayor Sheryl Lee.

Caldwell spent more than $11,000 during her campaign, but Lee spent just $653.78, according to their campaign disclosure forms.

Although Caldwell’s paperwork doesn’t say it, she confirmed Monday that the rest of the $10,000-plus she spent on the campaign came out of her own pocket.

All for a job that pays $9,600 a year.

Caldwell didn’t list her funds as a contribution in the form of a loan. Rather, she listed the campaign as having a net loss of $10,446.

“That was out of my personal funds,” Caldwell said Monday.

Caldwell said she didn’t regret spending her own money, but she was surprised Lee spent so little money.

“I was trying to get my name out there and get some issues before the people and I think we did get some issues before the people,” Caldwell said. “I think a lot of people understand how the taxes are calculated in Tyrone. It was a very educational process.”

Caldwell said the voters’ decision showed that recreation was a more important issue for the town “than erosion or some of the other problems we have in Tyrone.”
