Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers win first volleyball title

“Our journey has been one of the most awesome experiences of my coaching career,” said Starr’s Mill volleyball head coach Dottie Licciardi. The Lady Panthers started the season with a loss but went 44-8, winning the area 2-AAAAA championship on their way to the school’s first state title in volleyball.

The state final pitted Starr’s Mill against Sequoyah, a team that had beaten them three weeks earlier, 25-18, 25-23. The Lady Panthers avenged that loss winning three of five games, 25-22, 25-16 and 15-10. Kurtsen Carr and Aubry Ireland had 13 kills and 12 kills in the match against Sequoyah respectively, while Carr added 23 digs and Kelley Elder added 15. Alex Hayes had 3.5 blocks, while Carr, Niki Patriarca and Shelley MacBean each had two. Patriarca added 38 assists and two service aces, while Carr had three service aces. Receivng serves was also a strength in the final. A perfect score is 3.00 and Shelley MacBean had a score of 2.38, Lauren Gray had a score of 2.22 and Elder had a score of 2.13.

“The girls realized that they had to be aggressive servers, scrappy floor defenders and accurate passers to run our offense,” said Licciardi. “The work ethic of these 12 girls was incredible.”
