Area schools make distingished listThe Georgia Department of Education has named seven Fulton schools to its list of 2005 Title I Distinguished Schools. The distinction is given to Title I schools that make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for three or more consecutive years, or make the greatest gains in closing the achievement gap for disaggregated student groups. Brookview, Campbell, High Point, and Oak Knoll elementary schools will receive Certificates of Recognition for achieving AYP for three or more consecutive years. Schools making AYP for four or more consecutive years are eligible for monetary awards that are based on the schools poverty index. In addition to receiving a Certificate of Recognition, Stonewall Tell Elementary School will receive $12,492 from the state Department of Education for achieving AYP for four consecutive years. Bethune Elementary School and Randolph Elementary School both made AYP for six consecutive years and will be awarded $50,700 and $15,615, respectively. Schools receiving monetary awards must use the funds for educational purposes only. Each school will decide specifically how funds will be spent. The money can be awarded as incentive pay to staff, used to purchase instructional supplies, or be used for special schoolwide projects. The Title I Distinguished Schools and Recognition Program was restructured this year to be in alignment with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. In addition to rewarding schools that make AYP, the program also identifies Title I schools that are models of best practices for schools of similar demographics identified for school improvement. Title I is a program of the U.S. Department of Education that provides additional funding resources to identified schools with a significant number of economically disadvantaged students. |
