Citizen's Summit to debate rapid growth in metro Atlanta
The Citizen's Summit, the largest annual gathering of community activists in the Atlanta region, has been scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 13, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Decatur. The summit, jointly sponsored by the Sierra Club and Southface Energy Institute, will feature presentations and discussion by three regional leaders about how the Atlanta region can accommodate millions more people without traffic grinding to a halt and the quality of life declining. Sam Olens, chair of the Cobb County Commission, Von NKosi, manager of the Mixed Income Communities Initiative, and John Sibley, president of the Georgia Conservancy, will debate how the region can accommodate growth from their prospective in local government, housing and the environment. The discussion will take place during the luncheon for the day-long summit. The Citizen's Summit also features workshops, tours of smart growth projects and a first ever Community Awards reception for local governments that are taking the lead to create livable and sustainable communities. It provides an opportunity to learn about key environmental, growth and development issues as well as the nuts and bolts of more environmentally sustainable living. The Citizens Summit/Environmental Living Conference will bring together everyday citizens, community activists, planning, energy and building professionals to make the connections, gain the knowledge and tools and create the vision for a more sustainable Georgia.ÊÊÊ Ê The cost to attend the Citizens Summit is $30 per person, including lunch, with discounts available to students.
