New terminal will serve global travelersInternational passenger activity at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has increased by more than 80 percent during the past eight years. As the growth of international passengers continues, the city of Atlanta remains proactive in expanding its ability to assist international passengers by designing and constructing the Maynard Holbrook Jackson Jr. International Terminal. The terminal will accommodate the needs of global travelers, while maintaining the highest security standards. Supported by a new-elevated roadway system that will create a new front door to the airport through Aviation Boulevard, the terminal will also provide easy access to the other concourses at the worlds busiest passenger airport. Additionally, passengers will enjoy the immediate access provided by the 1,100 space parking garage located adjacent to the facility. The 1.2 million square foot terminal will be used primarily for international passengers, but will also serve domestic passengers. The city solicited qualification statements and proposals from the top construction management companies in the country. After an extensive competition, the city awarded the construction management at risk contract to the Joint Venture team of Holder, Manhattan, Moody, and Hunt. This innovative approach creates a team environment for the city, the architect, and the construction manager at risk to achieve the greatest value for the funds and time available for the project. The team will manage all safety, diversity, construction phasing, scheduling, and cost estimating. Currently, the total value of work for which the team will be responsible is estimated at $746 million. The joint venture team is required to solicit and award all trade packages and subcontracts on a competitive basis, which will guarantee the maximum number of opportunities for all companies to do business at the Airport. Tommy Holder, chairman and CEO of Holder Construction Company, says, I appreciate our team being selected for this historic project, and we are committed to ensuring the new international terminal is completed on schedule and within budget. The Airports International Terminal project will provide major contract and construction opportunities. We will be accepting bids for terminal structure, paving, interior finish work, electrical and mechanical system work, parking decks, and other components of this project. These bids will be worth an estimated $650 million. C. David Moody, Jr. is the diversity partner in the joint venture, with 25 percent ownership.Moody stated, We are proud to be part of a team that expects to see more than 34 percent participation by minority and female owned business enterprises in the construction. We are committed to expanding opportunities and ensuring goals are exceeded. Additionally, we hope to increase the business and construction knowledge of these companies during the project. The construction manager at risk is required to perform pre-construction services to review the design, logistics, pricing and scheduling of this complex and complicated project. Additionally, the team is required to guarantee the maximum price for the entire project, as well as individual components. In this way, the city only pays for exactly what it needs and only for costs actually incurred by the construction manager at risk. The construction of the international terminal is the start of phase two of the Hartsfield-Jackson Development Program, the largest capital program in Georgias history, said Aviation General Manager Ben DeCosta. The status of phase one, the fifth runway, is excellent. The complicated earth-moving project has been and continues to be an overwhelming success with almost 20 million cubic yards of fill material already conveyed to the site through the use of an extensive environmentally friendly conveyor system. The fifth runway is well ahead of schedule and is on budget. The city anticipates that the construction for the international terminal could commence as early as this year and anticipates occupancy in the spring of 2008. The continued growth of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport will assure that Atlantas airport will remain a vital link in the countrys national and international transportation systems. |
