Gang-like activity stalks Fairburn subdivisionBy LINDSAY BIANCHI The residents of Meadow Glen, a subdivision off Ga. Highway 74 in Fairburn have had enough. Last weekend, the Fairburn police received 11 calls concerning criminal behavior in the area. Four burglaries have been reported in the last week as well as two suspicious persons and one arrest was made for loitering. A six-year old child was also beaten up in the subdivision. This sudden rise of lawlessness is being attributed to unsupervised teens who live in Meadow Glen, said Fairburn officials. The gang-like activity reportedly includes dress codes such as baggy white t-shirts and overt drug use. Reports of gunfire along with an assault on the Cambridge Fair property manager, a neighborhood adjacent to Meadow Glen, have helped to draw the attention of Mayor Betty Hannah. We will not tolerate this," she said after Fairburns City Council meeting Monday night. The may said that police presence has been stepped up in response to the calls. We are pro-actively dealing with this situation. Police Chief Charles Long, who has just been on the job for two weeks, is also concerned about the issue. The chief said a collaborative partnership is being made with the residents to help report any suspicious activity and a neighborhood watch is being formed. We are on top of it. This is an uncomfortable quality of life issue," Long said. |
