Dixie Wing hosts WWII event

Travel back in time Nov. 13 and relive the life-and-death drama of World War II aerial combat in Europe. The Dixie Wing, Commemorative Air Force will host “A Flight With Eagles: 365th Fighter Group Hell Hawks Symposium” at their hangar, the Historical Airpower Facility, at Falcon Field in Peachtree City.

The Hell Hawks flew the famous Republic P-47 Thunderbolt and were assigned to the Ninth Air Force of the United States Army Air Force from December 1943 until the end of World War II. The Hell Hawks provided close air support to United States and allied forces in France, Belgium and Germany and were awarded Distinguished Unit Citations in October 1944 and April 1945.

“A Flight With Eagles” will be held the week of Veterans Day and will feature a panel discussion of Hell Hawks veterans moderated by John "Skipper" Hyle, former Captain, USAF and F-16 Viper pilot. At least one rare P-47 Thunderbolt and other operational World War II aircraft, including a North American P-51 Mustang and Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber, military vehicles and memorabilia will be on display.

Proceeds from the event to benefit “Education Through Living History” a World War II history program presented by Dixie Wing volunteers at the Historical Airpower Facility. “Education Through Living History” is available to area schools and youth groups free of charge.
