Trash pickup problems cited

EPI says date changed, but some residents weren’t notified

South Peachtree City residents with trash and recycling pickup problems are having trouble voicing their complaints to their provider, EPI, city officials said.

An EPI official said the problem occurred after some southside residents didn’t get notice that their trash and recycling pickup have been changed to the same day.

Michael Hunter, EPI’s new site manager, said the company changed its routes in Peachtree City so the trash and recycling could be picked up on the same day. Previously, they were picked up on different days, he said.

“This was an effort to make recycling and garbage pickup easier for residents,” Hunter said Wednesday afternoon. “We’re working to get it picked up and re-notify people.”

Residents calling to complain about their problems reported getting busy signals continuously when trying to call EPI, said Peachtree City Public Information Officer Betsy Tyler.

Persons calling City Hall have said several entire subdivisions were missed for either trash or recycling pickup, and Tyler passed the complaints along via e-mail.

Tyler said she has tried to call EPI but hasn’t been able to get through. She spoke to one resident who called EPI and got through, only to be told she had a 30 or 40 minute wait to speak to someone.

“I just hope they can get this straightened out because there are a lot of aggravated folks at the moment,” Tyler said Wednesday morning.

Most of the complaints have been from subdivisions south of Crosstown Road, Tyler said.

Tyler has gotten little response from the company save for one return voicemail left for her last week, she said.

The city has been getting complaints since last Wednesday, ironically after a meeting with Hunter the same day to address several concerns, Tyler said. One of the city’s concerns was about complaints of leaking trash trucks, and she said the company will be rolling out a new fleet of trucks which use an automated arm to dump the trash into the truck.

“He’s implementing changes that we hope long-term will give better service,” Tyler said.
