Renewing your driver’s license has never been easier

“I don’t want to send my credit card information over the Internet.”

“I don’t like my driver’s license photo and absolutely have to get another one taken.”

“I’ve always renewed the day before my birthday, so why change now?”

These are valid reasons why qualified Georgia residents aren’t taking advantage of the state’s offer to renew their driver’s license or identification card by mail, Internet or telephone. With wait times and the compounded frustrations felt by customers and staff on the rise, can these reasons justify throwing away the Automated Renewal Application?

“The DMVS continues to develop new strategies to cut down on the amount of time we ask our customers to wait in line. We are concentrating on staffing and harnessing new technology to make doing business with our Agency easier,” said DMVS Commissioner James R. Davis.

Until these processes can be implemented, the long lines are destined to remain, especially in the metro Atlanta area. Georgia’s growing population, an increase in young drivers ready to be tested and licensed and tougher traffic laws which lead to license suspensions all contribute to the overflowing Customer Service Centers.

Renewing a driver’s license or state identification card by mail, Internet or telephone is easy, will save valuable time and frustration, and most importantly, is a very secure process.

If you are eligible, you will receive a Renewal Application by mail from the DMVS about 60 days before your expiration date. The Renewal Application will contain all the information you need to renew your driver’s license or identification card without having to visit a DMVS facility. Any change to your driver’s license, must be handled in person. If you’ve moved or married, you must visit a Customer Service Center to update your license. Please open the correspondence and review it carefully. Many customers bring the application in to one of our offices. That is not necessary. You may renew from the comfort from your home or office.

Those that renew by mail, Internet or telephone receive the same quality driver’s license or ID card as issued at a license facility, and it will be mailed right to your door. American Express, Discover, MaserCard and Visa are acceptable forms of payment for Internet and telephone renewal options. Checks or money orders can only be accepted when renewing by mail. There is no service fee for choosing to use the Automated Renewal Program.

Over 986,883 motorists have taken advantage of this program since it was initiated in May, 2002. While that number seems impressive, it represents only 43 percent of the Renewal Applications that were delivered.

Last month, 71,519 drivers received the Automated Renewal Application. A total of 36,882 chose to use it. To all of you Georgians using the Automated Renewal options, the State thanks you. You have done your part to help reduce the long lines and wait times for those that must visit a Customer Service Center to take care of a more complicated transaction.
