Runny nose, aches or chills? Visit FCH Minor Emergency Care Center

Flu season will soon arrive, and physicians at Fayette Community Hospital are expecting a surge in emergency room visits. To ease the load in the main campus Emergency Department, doctors are encouraging residents to seek relief for flu-related symptoms and non-life threatening ailments at their personal physicians’ office or visit the hospital’s Minor Emergency Care Center.

The MECC is located about 1.5 miles east of the main hospital on Yorktown Drive off Ga. Highway 54. The Center is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and accepts the same insurance plans as the main ED. The Center offers 15 patient care rooms, on-site X-ray technology and many laboratory tests.

To cut down on waiting time in the ED, visit Fayette Community Hospital’s Minor Emergency Care Center if you experience these non-life threatening ailments:

· Typical flu symptoms such as general body ache, muscle ache, low-grade fever, runny nose, sore throat, mild headache, or cough and congestion that is not associated with shortness of breath.

· Cold symptoms.

· Ear infection.

· Strains.

· Sprains.

· Simple lacerations.

· Foreign bodies in the eye.

· Urinary tract infections.

If you are experiencing chest pain or shortness of breath, you are urged to go to the nearest hospital, including Fayette Community Hospital’s main ED, immediately.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced a shortage in flu vaccines. Until additional vaccine supplies are available, the CDC recommends that some people, especially those with compromised immune systems and certain health conditions, get vaccinated first, including infants, senior citizens, pregnant women, patients with weakened immune systems and chronic diseases, and healthcare workers with direct patient care.

There are steps you can take to stay well this flu season:

· Wash your hands often.

· Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze.

· Get plenty of rest.

· Drink plenty of liquids.

· If you are experiencing cold or flu-like symptoms, stay home until you feel better.
