Fayette’s leaders head to Clayton State

Regent M. Allan Vigil and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academics and Fiscal Affairs Dr. Daniel S. Papp will headline the distinguished guests at the official dedication ceremony for Clayton College & State University’s new, $19 million, 131,000-square foot University Center tomorrow at 2 p.m.

The dedication ceremony will take place on the first floor of the University Center and will be followed by a ribbon cutting outside on the Plaza, a reception and guided tours of the building.

Vigil, who also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Clayton College & State University Foundation, will be representing the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.

One of the Southern Crescent’s most prominent businessmen and civic leaders, and the president and owner of Allan Vigil Ford in Morrow and Fayetteville, Ga., Vigil was appointed to the Board of Regents Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue in August 2003.

Clayton State President Dr. Thomas K. Harden will be the opening speaker for the dedication ceremony, followed by Vigil and Papp, who will be representing University System of Georgia Chancellor Dr. Thomas Meredith.

Also scheduled to speak are District 82 State Representative Gail M. Buckner, a Clayton State graduate, Clayton State Vice President for Operations Patrick J. O’Hare, Clayton State Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Sharon Hoffman and Gerald Heavens, president of the Clayton State Student Government Association.

Also expected to attend the ceremony are a wide range of civic leaders, including the Fayette County Development Authority’s Brian Cardoza, Fayette Board of Commissioners Chair Greg Dunn, former State Representative Bill Lee, Locust Grove Mayor Lorene Lindsey, Morrow Mayor Jim Millirons, the Henry County Council for Quality Growth’s Judy Neal, Lake City Mayor Willie Oswalt, and Clayton County School Superintendent Barbara Pulliam. Robert Lee, president of the Board of Trustees of the Clayton College & State University Foundation will also be present, as will the three former Foundation presidents, Harmon Born, Robert Oliver and John Parkerson.

In addition to serving as a student center, classroom building and administration building, the University Center also houses technical and software support for the students’ and faculty’s 6000 notebook computers, an information desk, faculty offices, the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences, meeting rooms and student organization offices as well as the offices of Campus Life.

Three years in construction, the University Center is a four-story steel frame structure with masonry exterior walls, and features more than 2,000 data drops and state-of-the-art audio-visual technology in the classrooms, keeping with the University’s reputation for expertise in the use of technology in education, and its pioneering Information Technology Project, wherein all students and faculty must have access to a notebook computer.
