Sandtown community partners honored Nov. 4

The Sandtown Community Association honored three business partners for their contributions to the area's schools at its monthly meeting November 4. The recognition was at the Sandtown Middle School cafeteria.

Three local developers in south Fulton – Richard Wernicke, John Wieland and HR Horton – have pledged a minimum of $10,000 toward Sandtown area schools. Wernicke's donation supports the Sandtown Middle School dance program and reading enrichment activities at Westlake High School. Horton supports the Saturday School program at Randolph Elementary, and Wieland is making money available for all Sandtown community schools.  

Hamilton Holmes Elementary holds Nov. 6 fall festival

On Saturday, November 6, Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary School celebrates its Fall Festival. The event, held noon to 4 p.m., features face painting, a moonwalk, dancing, food, games, prizes, and a chance to dunk Principal Gregory King and other school administrators.

"Day of the Dead" celebrated by Tri-Cities High School

Tri-Cities High School exhibited in the Dia de Los Muertos Festival at the Woodruff Arts Center. The free festival, hosted by the Mexican Center of Atlanta, was open to the public on October 30-31.

Tri-Cities High School students created their exhibit in honor of individuals who lost their lives trying to cross the Mexico/United States border. The exhibit focused on the dangers of the actual crossing, as well as the motivational factors for the journey. Through this project, students were able to give depth to the study of Mexican culture and raise awareness to an important issue affecting many families in the community.

Conley Hills ES offers free English classes

Conley Hills Elementary School offers free English classes for Non-English speaking parents and community members every Friday at the school. Beginners’ classes are held 5:30-7 p.m. and advanced classes are held from 7-8:30 p.m.  For more information on the classes, contact Gloria Ayala at the school, 404-669-8170. 

Bear Creek Middle wants “Cash for School Kids”

Shannon Mall’s “Cash for School Kids” program is off and running for the 2004-05 school year and Bear Creek Middle School is again taking part in this community project. The school’s media center is competing with 15 other local schools for a grand prize of $5,000. Bear Creek is currently in third place with 13,040 points. Each participating school is awarded 10 points for every dollar spent at the mall between now and May 9, 2005. 

College Park Elementary casts its vote for Top Dog

College Park Elementary students learned about the election process through a schoolwide vote on their favorite storybook characters. During the week of November 1-5, students are choosing the best character – Oscar or Martha – from two popular children’s books, The Hallo-wiener and Martha Speaks. Both books feature dogs as the main character.
