Finding Your Folks: Reader’s ‘pedigree’ includes Cook, Orr, Minter, Scarbrough, Vickery and others

My column on pedigrees last week drew a quick response from Cecil Shipley, formerly a Fayette Countian, now a resident of Tennessee. Cecil, you remember, was the person who purchased the Kirby Bible and has written in response to several other columns.

Before I launch into the pedigree Cecil submitted, I’d like to write a little more about the pedigree and a similar format, the Ahnentafel. This type of report lists ancestors in the same order as a pedigree (from the present to the past), but more in text form or in a list. Each ancestor is given a number, starting with yourself as number one. Your father is number two, your mother three, your father’s parents four and five, your mother’s parents six and seven, etc. Notice that number of the father of each ancestor is double that of the child. The mother of each ancestor is double plus one.

These two reports give quick access to numerous family lines without the clutter of siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins, and always proceed from the present to the past (ancestors).

Two other popular reports are the register report and the descendant report, which list descendants of one ancestor, from the past to the present. Another is the family group sheet which only lists the husband, wife and children of one family. Most computer genealogy programs have the capability of producing all these types of reports.

Cecil’s wife, Gay, has many ancestors from our readership area, and he was kind enough to share them with us in her pedigree. Here are the ancestors of Gay Cook Shipley:

Gay Cook was born in Crawford Long Hospital, Atlanta, Fulton Co. (Surely you didn’t think I would give away a lady’s birth date, did you?)

Gay’s parents are Thomas Henley Cook, b. 2 Feb 1931 in Ga. and Mary Dallas Orr, b. 2 May 1929 in the family home on Orr Road, Coweta Co.

Gay’s grandparents are:
Roy Cook, b. 23 Aug 1890 in Campbell (now Fulton) Co., d. 31 Jul 1934, and Stevie Scarbrough, b. 21 Oct 1903 in Ga., d. 28 Oct 1993 in Fairburn, Campbell Co. Both are buried in Shadnor Baptist Church Cemetery, Union City.

Henry Brewster Orr, b. 29 June 1904 in the family home on Orr Road, Coweta Co., d. 19 April 1973 in Newnan, and Cora Lee Minter, b. 18 Jan. 1902 in Meriwether or Coweta Co., d. 21 March 1999 in Beaulie Nursing Home, Newnan. Both are buried in Sharpsburg Baptist Church Cemetery.

Gay’s great-grandparents are:
Robert L. Cook, b. 8 Nov. 1861 in Campbell Co., d. 23 Nov. 1940 in Fulton Co., and Mattie Allen Word, b. 4 March 1869 in Ga., d. 16 Apr 1949 in Fulton Co. Both are buried in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Palmetto.

Steven Amaziah Scarbrough, b. 26 May 1880 in Campbell Co., d. 4 Oct 1903 in Ga., and Essie M. Vickery, b. 10 March 1885 in Ga., and died 8 Oct. 1974 in Ga. Both are buried in Shadnor Baptist Church Cemetery.

William Benjamin Orr, Jr., b. 6 Aug 1870 in Coweta Co., d. 19 April 1915 in Coweta Co., and Liddia May Glass, b. 20 Dec. 1872 in Ga., d. 26 Dec 1936 in Coweta Co. Both are buried in Sharpsburg Baptist Church Cemetery.

James William Minter, b. 13 Jan. 1868 in Ga., d. 4 Mar 1947 in Ga., and Martha Ann Langford, b. 27 Feb 1869 in Ga., d. 26 Oct. 1928 in Ga. Both are buried in Providence First Baptist Church Cemetery, Williamson, Pike County.

Gay’s great-great grandparents are:
John Cook, b. 1 Jan 1814 in Ga., d. 25 Dec 1892 in Campbell Co., and Polly Ann Burnett, b. 26 Oct 1825 in Ga., d. 11 Mar 1887 in Campbell Co. Both are buried in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Palmetto.

Thomas Jefferson Word, b. 15 Feb 1837 in Carroll Co., d. 16 Oct 1911 in Campbell Co., and Martha Elizabeth Wilkerson, b. 27 Aug 1844 in Ga., d. 16 Jan 1874 in Ga. Their burial location has not been identified.

Francis Marion Scarbrough, b. 27 Jun 1849 in DeKalb County, d. 7 Dec. 1933 in Fulton County, and Harriett Elizabeth Nolen, b. 1 Apr 1850 in Campbell Co., d. 18 Nov 1931 in Campbell Co. Both are buried in Shadnor Baptist Church Cemetery.

Alfred B. Vickery married Louise Owens and both are buried Ramah Church Cemetery, Palmetto.

William Benjamin Orr, Sr., b. 14 Oct 1838 in Ga., d. 5 Oct. 1916 in Newnan, and Mary Dallas Brewster, b. 7 Sep. 1844 in Ga., d. 29 May 1881 in Coweta Co. Both are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Newnan.

Robert Edward Glass, b. 18 Mar 1848 in Ga., d. 6 May 1903 in Coweta Co., and Mary Lula North b. 26 Oct 1853 in Ga., d. Jan 1886 in Coweta Co. Both are buried in Sharpsburg Baptist Church Cemetery.

William Chapman Minter, b. 21 April 1843 in Ga., d. 16 Dec. 1928 in Fayette Co., and Mary Ann Parks, b. 18 June 1843 in Upson County, d. 25 Dec 1920 in Fayette Co. Both are buried in Inman United Methodist Church Cemetery Fayette Co.

The parents of Martha Ann Langford have not been identified.
