Starr’s Mill softball season ends

The Starr’s Mill Lady Panther varsity softball team did not make it back to the championship game this year. Having made it to one of the final eight spots, Starr’s Mill opened the final stretch with a 2-0 loss to Brookwood, followed by a 13-1 win over Coffee County and a 6-1 loss to Harrison.

In the Brookwood game, the Lady Panthers remained deadlocked with the Lady Broncos until the bottom of the sixth inning. Two errors proved costly, driving in two unearned runs. Pitcher Jackie Jones picked up the loss, despite pitching well. She gave up four hits and struck out two batters.

“It was the best game we played against Brookwood all year,” said Coach Mark Williamson.

The Starr’s Mill bats came alive in their game against Coffee. Jones went 4-for-5, while Lindsey Walker, Holly Oglesbee, Lynsey Tedford and Lindsey Glidden each had two hits. Jones struck out three batters and picked up the win.

The game against Harrison did not go very well. Jones gave up 10 hits and the defense committed two more costly errors. The Lady Panthers lone run came in the bottom of the sixth when Jones singled and scored after three straight walks.

Starr’s Mill finished with a record of 27-17. Their final ranking in AAAAA was sixth, according to a coaches’ poll on www.gasports.com. The team will return eight of the nine players in their defensive line-up and should be in contention once again next year.
