VFW Buddy Poppy Day set for Sat.Peachtree City VFW Post 9949 is holding its Fall VFW Buddy Poppy distribution Saturday Nov, 6. Post members will be in front of Kroger, Kmart & Wal-Mart stores in Peachtree City from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. These Buddy Poppies are free, but the post is collecting contributions for its Veterans Relief Fund that is used to provide relief to veterans, their families, their widows and their orphans. The VFW Buddy Poppy is the Flower of Remembrance. Recipients are requested to you wear them at least through Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Personally, I wear mine on my sport coat year-round just as many citizens have worn U.S. flag pins on their lapels since 9/11, said Bob Konrad, quartermaster of Post 9949. The VFW Buddy Poppy has its genesis in the poem In Flanders Fields. VFW Buddy Poppies are required to be assembled by disabled, needy and ageing veterans in VA Hospitals, nursing homes or in some cases in their homes. Part of the money VFW Posts pay for Buddy Poppies goes to these hard working needy veterans. The first national distribution of Buddy Poppies was by VFW Posts in May 1922. The following are the audited results of the Veterans Relief Fund for the year starting July 1, 2002: Receipts, $5,387; Disbursed, $6,028. Major benefactors include Southland Nursing Home Vets ($783), Atlanta VA Hospital ($1,200), VFW National Home for Children ($1,000), Disabled American Vets ($500), local assistance to needy vets ($1,399), and the purchase of VFW Buddy Poppies ($840). In addition to the Buddy Poppy distribution, the post will offer Veterans Memorial Bricks for sale for $30 and will solicit for new VFW members. |
