Homeless center development aided by countyThe Fulton County Board of Commissioners approved $180,000 at its October 20 meeting to help with start-up expenses for a countywide homeless center being developed in downtown Atlanta. This is a one-time allocation for operating costs to assist the Atlanta 24/7 Gateway Homeless Center, a public-private multi-agency collaborative that will help chronically homeless persons in all of Fulton, including unincorporated North and South areas. The advance funds will buy computers and other equipment, and provide six months of staff training, office supplies, and salaries for the director and an administrative assistant. The new center will be in the former Atlanta Pretrial Detention Center at 236 Peachtree Street, SW. Renovation is underway, with an expected completion date of Spring 2005. The center will be managed by AUM Community Ministries, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Atlanta Union Mission. The building will be managed by 24/7 Gateway, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta. Fulton provides nearly $5 million annually to 40 homeless service organizations, and operates Jefferson Place, which has earned a HUD Best Practice award for its mens night shelter and supportive services for more than 300 homeless men, women and children.
